Frequently Asked Questions

Please read this document carefully, as it contains answers to our most common questions. If after reading this document you still have questions, you may e-mail the TBP Bookswap Chair.

What is the Bookswap?

The Bookswap is a service to CWRU students provided by the Ohio Alpha chapter of Tau Beta Pi. We collect used textbooks from student sellers, and then attempt to sell the books on their behalf. The books are sold to other students at a price set by the seller.

Once a book has sold, most of the money goes back to the seller (that means you!). We even hold onto unsold books for you between semesters if you do not wish to reclaim them at that time.

Where and When is the Bookswap?

The Bookswap is held during the first week of every semester in Nord 310. You may know us by our banner, which appears each semester over the entrance of Nord Hall.

We collect books from sellers throughout the Bookswap, and also hold a special collection period during finals week each semester. Those interested in selling their textbooks at the Bookswap should either bring them to Nord during the Swap, or look for us in Nord atrium during finals. We generally have collection representatives in Fribley, Thwing, and many of the dorms as well! Check our calendar for a complete schedule.

What are your hours of operation?

The Bookswap occurs during the first week of classes every semester. We are open from 9am to 4pm, Monday through Friday. Monday is for browsing only; sales begin Tuesday. Money can be picked up on Thursday or Friday.

When can I bring my books?

We collect books during finals week each semester. Look for our representatives in Nord atrium, or check our website for a complete listing of collection times and places. We also collect books every day during the Swap. Try to bring your books on Monday: that ensures they are on-sale for the duration of the swap. Of course, we are willing to accept books any day that week.

Can I sell any book at the Bookswap?

Yes! Although the book is most likely to sell if it is going to be used for a class next semester, we will attempt to sell any book, even if it isn’t a required course book, or isn’t even a textbook!

How do I know when my books sell?

We send out immediate confirmation emails when a textbook sells, so check your e-mail. You can also search our online database for a book’s status, or stop by the Bookswap and ask.

What happens if my book doesn't sell?

If your book does not sell you have two options. You can choose to leave the book with us and we will attempt to sell it again at the next Bookswap. Alternatively, you can always choose to reclaim your book at any time during the Bookswap..

When can I reclaim my books?

Books may be reclaimed any day during Swap Week. When Swap Week is not in session, the books are in storage and cannot be retrieved. No exceptions! If you wish to have someone claim books on your behalf, you must contact the Bookswap Chair first..

What happens to my books when I graduate?

Tau Beta Pi is more than happy to hold onto your books for you. However, we advise you to reclaim your books before you leave so we are not left with outdated inventory. After you graduate, we may contact you and ask you to donate or reclaim your books to us so that we may get rid of them. If we are unable to reach you, we will claim the books after two attempts (once per semester). If you wish to have a current student claim books on your behalf, you must contact the Bookswap Chair first.

When can I pick up money?

Money may be picked up Thursday or Friday of the Bookswap. No exceptions! If you are unable to pick up your money at that time, you may stop by during the next swap. Payouts are only made during Swap Week.

Generally speaking: payouts only occur on the Thursday and Friday of Swap Week. Current students may not receive payment at any other time. Alumni must submit a payment request within two weeks of notification of sale.

What if I forgot to pick up my money?

You may stop by the Bookswap the following semester. Payment requests from current students will not be acknowledged.

But I'm a graduating senior!

You may submit a payment request during the Bookswap following your graduation.

But I'm on co-op/study abroad/etc!

You will have to stop by the Bookswap the following semester. Payment requests from current students will not be acknowledged.

What happens if a book sells after I graduate?

If a book sells after you have graduated, you must submit a payment request within two weeks of the sale. We will send you a check at that time.

Can I use money from a sale to buy textbooks?

Absolutely. Just let the cashier know and we’ll be happy to help you out. This request may be made any day during Swap Week.
